Velveteen Vargas is a mixed race inner city girl from Brooklyn. Her mother is abusive, and her world is shaky at best. Her neighborhood is a pit of evil, crime, and filth, and she’s just trying to survive. Then Velveteen’s world changes when she is offered a chance to stay with a host family in upstate New York, that also has a stable nearby that houses an unruly and troubled horse. The two will collide into a tumultuous relationship that will either make them, or break them both.
I absolutely loved this book! It is viciously raw and honest. It delves into the issues of race, class, sex, and coming of age. This was a book I could feel in my soul. It has been years since I have read a book that was as well written and thought out as this one.
Get the book! Read it and enjoy!
Until my next review.
